We live in a world that is more complex and connected than ever before. It requires a deeper acknowledgement of how the choices we make today, big and small, will impact our world tomorrow.

Almost everything we do, every day, puts stress on the environment. What we eat, what we wear, and how we get around. We can’t stop living our lives, we can’t stop the progress of the modern, industrialized world.

The challenge is to try to live our lives in a better, more sustainable way.

At DuPont Industrial Biosciences, we develop the essential innovations for society to thrive - helping our customers in a range of industries improve the sustainability and efficiency of their processes, and make products that are better, safer, and cleaner for everyone. The catalysts we create in the lab become catalysts for living a more sustainable life. In ways big and small, we’re in the world with you.

By 2050, over nine billion people will need access to safe and healthy food, fuel, and other resources.
DID YOU KNOW?

The majority of automatic dishwashing detergents in the world include enzymes from DuPont?

Efficacy —or tough stain removal— is one of the most important features we look for in a dish detergent. Enzymes work by literally eating away at different types of food soils, such as starches, proteins, and fats. That’s why there is no need to pre-rinse your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher.

FABRIC AND
HOME CARE

Enzymes are used in laundry and dish detergents around the world for their superior ability to remove tough stains. Renewable and biodegradable, they have helped to improve the sustainability of household detergents by replacing harsher cleaning agents, while providing the performance we need to stay clean in a (sometimes messy) modern world.

That’s why we partner with the world’s largest brands to develop new technologies - such as our enzymes that perform at lower wash temperatures - that help to make everyday sustainability as simple as doing the laundry.

COLD WATER WASHING

When doing laundry, the biggest use of energy occurs when we heat the water in our washing machines. So how can we lower washing temperatures and still get clothes clean? That’s the challenge DuPont set out to solve when developing next generation enzyme technology for laundry detergents.

BIOMATERIALS

For over 200 years DuPont has helped propel us into the modern age with innovations in materials science like nylon, Lycra®, and Kevlar®. Our advanced material technology has even helped propel us to space.

Today, we’re focused on a new challenge: creating bio-based materials from renewable sources, rather than petroleum.
Creating materials that are sourced from plants and built with biotechnology to improve performance helps society live more sustainably. We like to think of it as engineering inspired by nature.

ECO-EFFICIENT
PERFORMANCE FIBER
37% of the polymer in Sorona® is made using annually renewable plant-based ingredients, turning a formerly chemical process into an eco-efficient biological one.

But brands - and consumers - choose Sorona® because it transforms fabrics into experiences and weaves performance into the everyday. It’s a fiber that defines softness, with a resilience that defies boundaries.

“The development and commercialization of DuPont’s Bio-PDO™ technology is viewed as one of the seminal achievements in the application of industrial biotechnology to the materials industry. Sorona® polymer made from Bio-PDO™ has been the world’s best example of using biotechnology to create a new material with superior performance and environmental profile all at a cost that enables broad adoption.”

BIO-PDO:

HOW A SINGLE FIBER CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE.
We explore untapped possibilities and find a way to make it something truly special. This is how, after decades of research and asking the right questions, DuPont scientists discovered a way to produce PDO—a building block with endlessly versatile potential—using a biological process that would have a global impact:

The process begins by harvesting crops.
Sugar, or glucose is extracted from the crops.
Microorganisms are added to the glucose to begin a fermentation process (similar to the production of alcohol).
Fermentation replaces chemical synthesis, producing PDO (1,3-propanediol).
TPA (terephthalic acid) is added to the Bio-PDO, creating a molecular bond.
The result is Sorona®: a revolutionary, high performance polymer whose positive impact is felt by yarn spinners, manufacturers, designers and consumers across the globe.

ANIMAL NUTRITION AND HEALTH

For nearly 30 years we have helped producers of animal protein worldwide improve the nutritional health of animals and get more nutrition from their feed, reducing environmental impact. Today, our team of experts are focused on the symbiosis between nutrition and intestinal health. By understanding and influencing what goes on in the gut, this cutting-edge research will enable animal producers to improve the gut health, wellness and productivity of livestock – helping reduce the use of antibiotics.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES

It is estimated that about one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year is wasted - while almost 795 million people don’t have enough food to eat to lead a healthy active life.*

It’s one of the most urgent issues facing our modern age:
How do we manufacture and distribute nutritious food around the world, while using our resources more responsibly?

From lactose-free dairy products to bread that stays fresh longer, enzymes used in food and beverage processing are part of the solution, helping bring healthy nutrition to global populations.

CLEANER FUELS,
CLEANER AIR

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is now the largest single environmental health risk facing our world today.

One of the biggest contributors to air pollution is fossil fuel combustion - from cars on the road as well as the factories that power our modern world.

We’re working on many solutions to make transportation fuels cleaner, and reform the energy sector with renewable solutions. To reduce pollution in industries ranging from refining to mining, we provide both the technologies and the experts to help drive top performance and efficiency with environmental integrity.
